Instructor at Society for the Study of Swordsmanship - Durham Chapter

May 2011

The Society for the Study of Swordsmanship (SSS) is a Western Martial Arts group with chapters in Sheffield, Leeds, Durham & Whitby. The Society was founded in 1998 by Mark P. Donnelly Professor at Arms. We study & practise many varieties of combat forms from Medieval to late Victorian times. These include: Rapier, Longsword, Backsword, Courtsword, Cutlass, Infantry Sabre, Single Stick & Walking stick. We do not pursue "fencing" for sport nor do we re-enact battles or "stage" fights. We aspire to reproduce genuine swordsmanship as it was taught for self defence. After many years of studying and training across the UK, I became a qualified instructor by the British Federation for Historical Swordplay (BFHS). Training, planning lessons, close supervision and breaking down very complicated techniques in to easy to demonstrate and explainable actions are some of the skills required for instructing in such a niche martial art. I've also been responsible for taking a group of students to do demonstrations of historical swordplay. This requires quite a lot of logistical planning and ensuring that the delivery is appropriate for the public audience, balancing both entertainment and information.
